North Carolina State University, NC State or NCSU for short, is a public, coeducational, extensive research university located in Raleigh, which is the capital city of the US state of North Carolina, the county seat of Wake County, as well as the largest city in the state, after Charlotte, having a population estimated at a number of more than 400 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which also makes it the 45th largest city in USA, as well as the 8th fastest growing city in the country.
NCSU was founded in March 1887, by the North Carolina General Assembly, as a land-grant college, first starting as North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, adopting its current name after World War II, when its started to grow and change, in the summer of 1956, enrolling its first African-American undergraduates, named Edward Carson and Manuel Crockett, action which was not possible before.
Today, NC State is the principal technological institution of the University of North Carolina system, having an enrollment of more than 33 000 students, statistic which makes it the largest university in North Carolina. The institution offers its students over 100 bachelor’s degrees, while the graduate school offers more than 100 areas of study, which lead to master’s and doctoral degrees, NCSU having historical strengths in agriculture, design, engineering and textiles.
The university’s athletic teams are known as the NC State Wolfpack, who compete in 24 intercollegiate varsity sports in the NCAA Division I. The university has experienced victory many times in the past years, in many of the sports in which the Wolfpack teams compete, winning a total of 8 national championships, of which 2 are NCAA championships, 2 are AIAW championships, and the remaining 4 titles under other sanctioning bodies.
